THE FOUNDATION YEAR IS WHERE THIS ROUTE IS DECIDED, and MUFY is the most expensive pre-university year on our Malaysian board by a wide margin. Sunway College Kuala Lumpur charges RM38,600–41,000; Johor Bahru charges RM27,000–29,400 for the same qualification. Against MAHSA's RM9,650, City University's RM13,840, IIUM's RM17,500, INTI's RM21,931 and APU's RM28,400, the Kuala Lumpur campus is four times MAHSA and the Johor Bahru campus is nearly three times. THE JOHOR BAHRU SAVING HAS A CATCH WORTH RM11,600 OF THOUGHT: Advanced Mathematics, Global Studies and Contemporary Issues are taught only at Kuala Lumpur. Engineering, Computer Science, Actuarial Analytics and Digital Business all require higher-level mathematics at Year 12, so a student who takes the cheaper campus may close the very degrees that justify the price. Ask what they intend to study before recommending a campus. What the money buys that the cheaper foundations do not: MUFY is accepted by universities across Australia, New Zealand and the UK, not only by Monash, so the year is portable in a way a single-university foundation is not. TWO ENGINEERING DEGREES ARE 2+2, NOT 4: Biomedical Engineering and Materials Engineering are two years in Malaysia and two at Clayton in Melbourne, where Monash prints the 2026 international engineering fee as A$59,600 a year. A family budgeting RM64,800 a year for four years would be short by roughly RM650,000. Transfer needs a WAM of 50.

First year

RM49,920–71,040 a year for most degrees; RM138,720 for Medicine. MUFY beforehand is RM38,600–41,000 at Sunway College Kuala Lumpur or RM27,000–29,400 at Sunway College Johor Bahru, plus RM2,250 administrative fee for international students. All figures exclude 6% SST.

Other charges

6% SST on all tuition for international students; RM200 registration once; RM100 general amenities per semester; RM106 application fee. Living: Monash puts on-campus accommodation at RM440–3,000 a month depending on room type and off-campus from RM700, phone and internet from RM99 a month, meals RM7–50.

Entry

Two doors, and an eleven-year certificate reaches only the first. MONASH UNIVERSITY FOUNDATION YEAR (MUFY) is the pathway, and it is taught by Sunway College — Kuala Lumpur or Johor Bahru — not by Monash. Its own bar is a pass at SPM, O-Level or equivalent with at least five credits, plus Monash's English requirement, and a minimum age of 16. DIRECT ENTRY to the degree needs a completed Year 12 equivalent — A-Level, IB, STPM, MUFY or another qualification on Monash's list. Monash's published entry table names ten countries and Uzbekistan and Tajikistan are not among them, so where an attestat lands is a question for monash.edu/prior-study and for Sunway, and nobody has asked it yet.

English

IELTS (Academic) 6.5 overall with no band below 6.0 for the degree — a full band above what our record used to say. Higher for two courses: Human Nutrition wants 6.5 with 6.5 in reading and listening, and Medicine wants 7.0 with no band below 6.5. Also accepted: TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic 58, C1 Advanced 176. Tests must be sat within 24 months of the course start. BELOW 6.5 THERE IS A REAL ROUTE, not a refusal: Monash English runs 20 weeks (February and August, entry IELTS 5.5 with no band below 5.0, RM12,000 for international students) or 10 weeks (May and October, entry IELTS 6.0 with no band below 5.5, RM7,600), and completing it gives direct entry to most Monash degrees. It is not accepted for Medicine, and the 10-week version is not accepted for Human Nutrition. MUFY's own English entry is lower again — IELTS 5.5 with no band below 5.0 — and a student who passes MUFY English at 65% has met Monash's degree English bar without sitting IELTS again. Monash also warns that the Malaysian government sets its own English bar per course on top of the University's.

Intakes

February, July and October for most degrees — but the exceptions are the expensive ones and must be checked per course. Medicine, Pharmacy, Pharmaceutical Science and Biomedical Engineering are FEBRUARY ONLY. Actuarial Analytics and Digital Business are February and July. MUFY runs on a different calendar again: January, July and August.

Scholarships

READ THE ELIGIBILITY BEFORE QUOTING ANY OF IT, because the two largest awards are closed to our students. The ASEAN Monash Malaysia Scholarship — 100% of tuition, with a stipend for some recipients — is for ASEAN nationals, and Uzbekistan and Tajikistan are not ASEAN. The Monash Equity Scholarship is for Malaysian citizens and permanent residents only. So is the Sports Scholarship; the Indonesian bursary is for Indonesians. WHAT IS ACTUALLY OPEN to a Central Asian student is the MONASH HIGH ACHIEVER AWARD — RM5,000 off tuition per semester, awarded automatically at admission with no separate application — and it asks for a very high result: MUFY 89% or above, or A-Level 3 As, or IB 38. It excludes Medicine and Pharmacy. Beyond that there are 10% course bursaries on a named list of degrees, given to anyone holding a full offer, a 10% sibling discount, and for women entering Engineering an award worth RM6,000 in the first year at MUFY 86–88.9%, capped at seven recipients in February and July and six in October. At Sunway, MUFY students can apply for Sunway's own scholarships, but the one the guide names — the Jeffrey Cheah Entrance Scholarship — rewards SPM, Cambridge O-Level or Ontario results, none of which our students hold.
